Feeling artistic and decided to do some simple design work inspired by oriental Japan. I used symmetry and a very mild colour pallet to keep it simple as well as basic shapes.

Nice simple illustration Chris. You should try to create a few more and turn it into a series.

FMP Project - Update

I have now completed everything I will need for my FMP and I have brought in my aluminium logo and some framed decorative posters. I corrected some grammatical errors on my letterhead and I will print out the new version later on today on to Gmund Bier Weizen paper; although I have only 1 sheet remaining. I may keep the old version of the letterhead to show the back of the design next to the front of the new version. I am not completely certain I will use the framed decorative posters that I have designed as I have not attached them to the board yet and I am unsure whether it will work how I want it to. I am due to collect a mug I had printed today which is just a simple design with my logo on the front which I feel will fit in with the rest of my display. The rest of the week for me will be spent collating my rough folders and getting them ready, as currently they are incomplete and not to the standard I would like them; I will also spend the remainder of the week getting everything I have had printed displayed on my board and table to the point where I am happy.

A few weeks ago, I received some paper samples from Fedrigoni and I thought I would put a 100 gsm twill textured paper from the Savile Row range to use with my decorative poster design. The texture on the paper is quite distinctive and creates an interesting effect; the paper is definitely of high quality and the print has come out great. I will try out a few more types of paper to see if anything else works better, but I think the twill textured paper looks great with this particular print.

Now that I have completed the bulk of my work for the FMP Project, I have been experimenting with different ideas for posters for use as decoration and this is a style I have been playing about with. The first image is a photo of ridges in the sand which I took in Bangor a while back and the second image is a photo of the sea which was also taken in Bangor.

The business cards have been printed off and I recieved the cards in the mail today. The cards were printed off using Moo.com with 600gsm Mohawk Superfine card. I really like the blue strip of colour which runs down the edges of the cards.

Great business card Sam, I like the fact that you have opted to use a square shape which breaks the mould of a standard card and makes it stand out. The only issues you may face are; the fact that it will be difficult to find a place to print these cards off online especially with the rounded corners, you may have to go to a local print shop to get the job done properly. Also, depending on the size, the card may not fit in a standard size card holder like a normal card would which could be a big issue. I would also try to center the text towards the center a little more on the back of the card.

Materials for use with my FMP

I have been researching into what type of paper I will be using both online and using a selection of sample swatchbooks which I receieved from GFSmith. I have decided I will be using a type of paper manufactured by Gmund called Bier which is a natural themed paper which uses fibres recycled from use in the production of beer. I think this style of paper would work great with my nautical themed project; especially as the main aim of the project for me is to depend hugely on materials and keeping the designs simple and legible but still aesthetically pleasing. I have ordered samples of both 100gsm for use with letterheads and 250gsm for use on labels and other products which will need thicker card.

This is a mockup of a label I might use for my FMP. I will get the hole centered and I will use an eyelet to secure it and for aesthetical purposes. I have also ordered some thicker, more suitable card which will look a lot better.

This is a quick video showing the paper within one of the GFSmith swatchbooks.

I was looking around for paper suppliers for my letterhead and various other pieces of stationary and I came across a company called GFSmith, who I emailed to ask for some samples of smooth and textured paper. A couple of days later I received some swatchbooks with various types of paper with details on each one. I will definitely look into purchasing some paper from this company for use on my letterhead.
